Fabio Capello steps down from England captaincy

Fabio Capello resigned as manager of England on Wednesday following the Football Association's (FA) decision to strip John Terry of the captaincy, the FA confirmed.

In a remarkable twist to one of the most dramatic days in English football history, Capello's resignation was confirmed just hours after his likely successor Harry Redknapp was cleared of tax evasion charges.

Capello's departure from the post followed talks with FA officials reported to be furious at the Italian coach's public criticism of last week's decision to axe Terry as captain.

Capello's position had come under scrutiny after he told an Italian broadcaster on Sunday that he disagreed "absolutely" with the dismissal of Terry, who faces a criminal trial for allegations of racially abusing QPR defender Anton Ferdinand during a Premier League match in October 2011.

Although senior FA officials were known to be unhappy with Capello's comments, the former AC Milan and Real Madrid coach was expected to remain for the final few months of his contract, which expires after Euro 2012.

However in a bombshell announcement, the FA confirmed that Capello's four-year reign was over.

Immediate effect
"The Football Association can confirm that Fabio Capello has today resigned as England Manager," the statement said, following discussions between Capello, FA chairperson David Bernstein and FA general secretary Alex Horne.

"The discussions focused on the FA board's decision to remove the England team captaincy from John Terry and Fabio Capello's response through an Italian broadcast interview.

"Fabio's resignation was accepted and he will leave the post of England manager with immediate effect."

Capello was not immediately available for comment. FA officials have scheduled a press conference at Wembley on Thursday.

The 65-year-old took over as England coach in December 2007 following the country's failure to qualify for the Euro 2008 final, signed a lucrative £6 million-a-year contract with a brief to halt years of English footballing under-achievement on the international stage.

His hard-line disciplinarian approach reaped impressive results during an initial two-year honeymoon period, when a revitalised England qualified for the 2010 World Cup with ease.

Disastrous campaign
Capello won praise for his handling of the first controversy involving Terry's captaincy, when he summarily dismissed the Chelsea defender following allegations about his private life in early 2010.

However the bubble burst after a disastrous campaign in South Africa, which saw England draw with the US and Algeria, scrape a 1-0 win over Slovenia before suffering a humiliating 4-1 thrashing by Germany.

Capello, who had controversially been given a contract extension just prior to the finals, managed to cling on to his position but in many respects was battling the perception of being a lame duck manager.

His clumsy handling of the decision to reappoint Terry last year -- replacing Rio Ferdinand without informing the respected Manchester United defender first -- was sharply criticised.

With the FA letting it be known that they would prefer Capello's successor to be English, Tottenham manager Redknapp emerged as the overwhelming favourite to take up the post.

The biggest obstacle to Redknapp becoming England manager vanished on Wednesday when the 64-year-old was acquitted of tax evasion following a two-and-a-half week trial at Southwark Crown Court.

Successor
One bookmaker immediately suspended betting on Redknapp replacing Capello as odds on the Londoner taking over were slashed.

Former England managers Graham Taylor and Sven-Goran Eriksson both said Redknapp would be a logical successor.

"Now that Harry has been proved innocent it makes a clear path should the FA wish in the future to offer him the England manager's job when Fabio Capello comes to the end of his reign," Taylor told the BBC.

Eriksson said Redknapp had the perfect profile for the role.

"I think Redknapp will be a very, very good choice. He's English; he knows his football," he told the BBC.

"He is doing a great job with Tottenham and has done a great job with every team he's had in the past, so I guess it will be him. -- AFP

Juve stun Milan to put one foot in final

Juventus have one foot in the Italian Cup final after Martin Caceres scored a brace to hand them a 2-1 win over AC Milan in the semi-final, first leg at the San Siro on Wednesday.

Italian youth international Stephan El Shaarawy replied for the hosts but it wasn't enough.

The victory maintained the Serie A leaders' unbeaten run this season in league and cup.

It was the second time in this campaign the champions have lost to their bitter rivals but Milan coach Massimiliano Allegri denied his side's chances of reaching the final had been dimished.

"We have to accept the defeat knowing that nothing has been compromised," he told Rai.

"We were naive in conceding the second goal and that's disappointing in a game such as this.

"Those are errors we need to cut out but we'll stay serene. We had many players out injured but we don't have time to blame anyone," added Allegri in a reference to Juve's complaints at the weekend that the referee had cost them a win against Siena.

"I know my team's strengths with many strange injuries. We have to remain calm and continue to work hard."

The other semi-final is between Siena and Napoli, with their first leg to be played in Tuscany on Thursday.

The first half was a tentative and tight affair with few chances for either side, both of whom had rung the changes, resting several first choice regulars.

But Juve coach Antonio Conte praised his bit part players for their contribution.

"What I liked the most was the response from the lads, and I'm talking about the new ones and the ones called to the cause for an important match such as this in a Cup semi-final away to Milan," he said.

"The whole team gave an important response but particularly those players who have been less used than the others."

Clarence Seedorf lashed a dropping ball wide for Milan for whom El Shaarawy then beat Andrea Barzaglie with a clever touch only to fire his shot from a tight angle across the six-yard box.

Juve didn't create a decent chance until after the half hour mark when Marcelo Estigarribia thrashed wide from 15 yards.

Emanuele Giaccherini hit a shot from outside the box that took a wicked deflection but Milan goalkeeper Marco Amelia stretched out a hand to tip it over bar.

The second half was a much more lively affair thanks to the visitors taking an early lead.

Former Milan forward Marco Borriello wriggled free in the box to get off a shot that Amelia could only push out and Caceres was quickest onto the loose ball to finish on 53 minutes.

Juve threatened to run away with it and captain Alessandro Del Piero fizzed a shot wide of the upright.

But the hosts started to come back into it and following a cross from Luca Antonini, captain Massimo Ambrosini teed up El Shaarawy to fire home a crisp finish on 62 minutes.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic then had the ball in the net but it was ruled out for a somewhat obvious handball.

Milan appeared the more likely and Ibrahimovic had another chance that Giorgio Chiellini blocked with a dramatic full-length dive.

Juve went close when Amelia pushed out Mirko Vucinic's shot only for Fabio Quagliarella to arrive too late to knock home the rebound.

But seven minutes from time Giaccherini beat the offside trap to escape down the left and cross for Caceres to take a touch and plant an unstoppable curler into the top corner that left Amelia rooted to the spot.

There was an ugly finish to the game as Ibrahimovic, sent off and banned for three league games for slapping Napoli's Salvatore Aronica at the weekend, clashed with Juve goalkeeper Marco Storari while Chiellini also flared up with Milan assistant Mauro Tassotti.

Pilot crashes glider into Al Ain football crowd

AL AIN // Panic-stricken football fans fled for their lives last night when a stunt pilot lost control of his powered paraglider and careered into the crowd.

Supporters cowered with hands covering their heads for protection as the craft became entangled in some balloons and smashed into the stand at the Tahnoun bin Mohammed Stadium in Al Ain. The paraglider was one of two performing for more than 10,000 fans before the start of the derby match between Al Ain and Al Wahda.

"It's lucky more people weren't injured. The stand was absolutely crammed," a club official said.

Paramedics and police carried injured fans and the pilot down to the pitch running-track, where they were given first aid before ambulances took them to hospital.

Some of the victims had splatters of blood on their clothes and the paraglider pilot appeared to be unconscious.

An emergency nurse at Al Ain Hospital said about eight people, all men, were taken to the department by ambulance at about 7.30pm.

Powered paragliders and parachutists wear motors on their back which weigh up to 36kg. They can reach maximum speeds of 70kph and should not be flown in windy weather conditions.

It was not clear whether the was still attached to the engine when it crashed.

Football fans posted photographs on Twitter of ambulances and medics on the pitch.

A member of staff at the hospital's emergency department said it was likely that two of the injured would be kept in overnight for observation. All injuries were minor, he said.

Al Ain won the match 1-0.

Real and Barca top 'Money League'

Revenue at Europe's 20 leading clubs has increased again despite the economic crisis shaking many countries across the continent, business advisory firm Deloitte said in a report published on Thursday.

Spanish clubs Real Madrid and Barcelona maintain the top two slots in Deloitte's Football Money League, followed by Manchester United, Bayern Munich, Arsenal and Chelsea, the report said, based on revenue for the 2010-11 season.

"Continued growth of the top 20 clubs during 2010/11 emphasises the strength of football's top clubs, especially in these tough economic times," said Dan Jones, partner in the Sports Business Group at Deloitte.

"Whilst revenue growth has slowed from 8 percent in 2009/10 to 3 percent in 2010/11, their large and loyal supporter bases, ability to drive strong broadcast audiences and continuing attraction to corporate partners has made them relatively resilient to the economic downturn," he added.

The top 20 generated 4.4 billion euros ($5.83 billion) in revenue, more than a quarter of the total for European football as a whole.

Spain has been one of the European economies hardest hit by the euro crisis but Real Madrid and Barcelona are global brands that can be marketed to international viewers and sponsors.

"In much the same way as the Premier League is for England, they are very successful exports for the Spanish economy," Jones told Reuters.

"The challenge for Spain is that these two are so far ahead of the rest on and off the pitch."

Valencia, in 19th spot, were the only other club to make the top 20. The gulf between the rich and poor is wider in Spain than other countries because clubs sell TV rights individually rather than collectively.

The top 20 - who make up the world's highest earning clubs - are drawn from the big five European leagues. Six are from England, five from Italy, four from Germany, three from Spain and two from France.

The value of the Champions League was underlined as German club Schalke 04 jumped six places to make the top 10 for the first time on the back of reaching the last four of the premier European club competition.

Revenue at Real Madrid was 479.5 million euros, against 450.7 million for Barcelona and 367 million for Manchester United, beaten by Barcelona in last season's Champions League final.

Deloitte warned that United were likely to fall more than a 100 million euros adrift of their Spanish rivals in the current year after an early exit from the Champions League.

Big spending English Premier League leaders Manchester City, backrolled by cash from Abu Dhabi, were 12th on the list while Qatari-backed Paris Saint Germain, who top the French league, did not feature this time.

Many soccer clubs continue to make big losses as they spend heavily on players to try to ensure success on the field.

However, new rules introduced by European soccer's governing body UEFA mean clubs must curb their losses or risk exclusion from major tournaments.

"Football clubs have been very successful over the past 20 years at generating more revenue but less good historically at cost control and that is what Financial Fair Play is there to do," Jones said.

He said subdued activity in the January transfer window indicated that clubs were getting the message.

"There is as much focus on cost control as there has ever been," he added.

Transfer Rumors - Daniel Sturridge to Arsenal?

Arsenal are reportedly lining up a sensational summer move for Chelsea striker Daniel Sturridge.

The 22 year old former Manchester City striker is reportedly unhappy with being forced out wide favouring a more central role and according to the Daily Mail influential Gunner’s scout Steve Rowley has put the wheels in motion for a surprise cross London switch.

In addition to his insistence on a more central striking role Sturridge, who tops the Blues scoring charts with 10 goals, also wants to negotiate an improved contract despite having two-and-a-half years left on his current deal.

With Chelsea refusing to enter contract talks at this stage not to mention been linked with moves for Athletico Madrid striker Falcao as well as his former Porto team mate Hulk and Edinson Cavani a move to the Emirates could well materialise.
